McKee homer lifts Trojans to 2-1 win over Lake Central

When two great teams get together, the difference can be one play.

On Thursday night, the Chesterton softball team made more and remained undefeated with a 2-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Lake Central.

“Great win for us,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We had some strikeouts, but tonight was the first night we really saw quality pitching. I thought we handled it very well.”

The Trojans scored both runs in the second inning when Jill Bohnert led off with a double. Mallory McKee’s two-run home run put Chesterton on the board.

McKee and Bohnert each had two hits in the Trojans’ seven-hit attack.

Lake Central got a solo home run in the sixth inning, but couldn’t muster the game-tying run.

“Both teams sent a lot of hard stuff to the outfielders,” Hopson said. “Ours came up with some big plays. And our infield erased a leadoff single with a 1-6-3 double play.”

Chesterton mounted a rally in the sixth and LC did the same in the seventh, but both teams stranded two runners.
