Wiese (Girls Tennis), Marian Benitez (Girls Tennis) and Laura Langendorfer

Mandi Loving and Erik Babcock have similar athletic resumes. Both have
accumulated nine varsity awards in three different sports, along with being
honored as captain in two of the three their senior years. They both have
also played a major part in the success of their respective teams throughout
their four-year tenure at CHS.
They now have one more thing in common. Each were rewarded last night for
their impressive careers with the 2002-03 Most Valuable Senior Athlete Award
at the Spring Sports Awards Ceremony.
“I didn’t really know if was going to win, because there was a couple of
other kids that I thought could get it, but it was a great feeling to win,”
Babcock said, who’s trio of sports includes soccer, basketball and track.
“This ends things on a pretty high note for me. I struggled a bit my
freshman and sophomore years, but every year I got a little better and
improved. This is just a great accomplishment for me.”
Although he struggled to improve during his sophomore year, one of Babcock’s
fondest memories came from that particular time.
“I will never forget beating Valparaiso twice that year in soccer with both
games being decided on shoot-outs,” he said. “That was one of the few times
I actually got to beat Valpo and that’s one of the things you remember
most.”
Babcock will attend Rose-Hulman Institute next fall, where he’ll continue
his soccer career and study engineering. Before he worries about college, he
still has some unfinished business to take care of at CHS.
Babcock, who was the sectional champion in the high jump (6-0) last week,
hopes to continue his success tonight at the Valparaiso Track and Field
Regional.
“I just want to jump well and try to get a personal best,” he said. “6-4
will get you down to state and I think I can do that. That would be a real
big accomplishment for me and a nice way to top off my four years.”
Babcock has been a part of two sectional championships and one DAC title. He
won the most improved award and best defensive player award in basketball
this year, along with being named to the All-DAC soccer team the past two
seasons.
He was the Co-MVP in soccer this past fall and has collected 12 scholar
athlete awards.
Loving, who is the school record holder in the 400-meter dash, was equally
as thrilled to be honored with the most valuable award.
“This is so exciting for me because you put so much time in during the four
years with the three sports,” Loving said, who participates in cross
country, basketball and track. “It’s nice to get recognized for everything
you’ve done and all the hard work you put in.”
Loving is still undecided on what college she plans on attending, but she
has narrowed the choice down to two. She plans on walking on the track team
at either Indiana University or Ball State where she’ll study nutrition.
She has won 10 scholar athlete awards, while being part of six CHS teams
that have made state appearances. She has also been an integral part of the
Girls Track team that has won four straight Sectional Championships,
including the first Regional Championship in school-history won Tuesday
night at Highland.
“Last night I was so nervous going into the 400,” she said. “I was seeded
10th so the odds of me getting out were kind of slim, but I knew if I ran my
race and didn’t panic I could do it. I took it one stride at a time and just
tried to stay together mentally and finish strong.”
Loving’s will prevailed and the senior sprinter beat the odds landing the
final qualifying spot for the state meet after her third place finish.
“I wanted to go out on top and get to state,” she said. “Now I am looking to
have fun. The pressure is off of my shoulders because it’s all or nothing
now. Whatever happens, happens. It feels good to qualify, because coming off
of last week’s sectional I didn’t really feel I ran up to par, so it’s nice
to finish off strong individually. I knew the relays would make it down, but
I wasn’t sure about me individually, so that’s very special for me.”
Other highlights of the night included the girls athletic programs ending a
22-year drought by swiping the All-Sports Award title from DAC-rival
Valparaiso and both gymnastics coaches Mike and Maria Bachuchin and softball
coach LouAnn Hopson receiving standing ovations for being named the top
coach in Indiana for their respective sports.
Jay Huffmaster was also awarded the David Wayne Sayka Scholarship.
Huffmaster, a senior on the CHS baseball team, was presented a plaque by
Paul Jancarich and a $1,000 scholarship for his leadership, spirit and
overall love of the game.
Most Valuable awards were handed out to Rob Kamaski (Baseball), Ryan Rearick
(Boys Track Runner), Spencer West (Boys Track Field), Sam Chumbley and Mike
Gregoline (Boys Golf), Cassie Peller (Girls Track Runner), Emily Prather
(Girls Track Field), Marian Benitez and Andrea Wiese (Girls Tennis), Laura
Langendorfer (Softball), and Lauren West (Gymnastics).
Mental attitude awards went out to Casey Martin (Baseball), Travis Dunlap
(Boys Track), Mike Cho (Boys Golf), Mandi Loving and Lexi Yelton (Girls
Track), Liz Kozlik (Girls Tennis), Rachel Bergauff (Softball) and Amber
Vogan (Gymnastics).
Most Improved awards were given to Josh Malone (Baseball), Ed Lawson (Boys
Track), Eric Beckley and Alex Cook (Boys Golf), Jessica Johnson (Girls
Track), Brittany Cooley and Kristin Totten (Girls Tennis), Nicole Fetla and
Kayla Vargo (Softball), and Jessica Gravel and Margret Kleppe (Gymnastics).
