Late rally lifts Trojan baseball team to win

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team scored six runs in the seventh inning to blow open a close game and garner a 9-2 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over LaPorte on Wednesday.

The Trojans opened the scoring in the top of the first as Andrew Ralph was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. After Jordan Morandini sacrificed him to second base, Aery Pratt’s single to center scored Ralph.

LaPorte answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and held a lead until the Trojans put two runs on the board in the top of the fourth.

Pratt doubled to start the frame and scored on Austin VanderZanden’s one-out single to centerfield. A pickoff move got past the first baseman and VanderZanden would eventually come all the way around to score for a 3-2 Chesterton lead.

Things would stay that way until the top of the seventh when Corey Rusboldt started the inning with a one-out single. After a fly out, Michael Griffin drew a walk. Ralph singled to rightfield, scoring Rusboldt.

Eli Taubert walked to load the bases and Pratt also walked to drive in Griffin. Mike Crowley’s double to center scored Ralph and Taubert.

VanderZanden singled to score Pratt and Crowley to set the final score.

Offensively, Pratt was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI’s, while Crowley and VanderZanden each tallied two hits. Ralph, Sufana and Rusboldt also contributed to the 10-hit attack.

Mitch Kobitz allowed just four hits and struck out two in working all seven innings as he improved to 3-0 on the season.
