Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team scored early, and again late, in picking up an extra-inning 10-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Valparaiso on Monday.

In the top of the first, Andrew Ralph reached on an error and promptly stole second to get the game started. Jordan Morandini was hit by a pitch and forced out at second on an Aery Pratt fielder’s choice.

Mike Crowley walked to load the bases before Austin VanderZanden singled to right field to score Ralph and Pratt. Tyler Sufana singled, scoring Crowley and VanderZanden, for an early 4-0 lead.

The Vikings would score solo runs in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh inning against Pratt to send the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, VanderZanden walked two and was sacrificed to second by Mitch Kobitz. Sufana walked and Corey Rusboldt’s single to right field scored VanderZanden.

Michael Griffin followed with a single that plated Sufana and Rusboldt. Ralph was hit by a pitch and Eli Taubert drew a walk to reload the bases.

Dallas Milligan hit a ground ball to shortstop that was booted and allowed Griffin and Ralph to score. VanderZanden reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Taubert to push the lead to 10-4.

Milligan, who came on in relief of Pratt in the seventh, got a strike out, ground out and pop up to close the door in the eight and pick up the win.
