Both offenses were in full display Monday afternoon at Chesterton High School, but the Portage Indians came up with more big hits.

The Indians handed the Chesterton softball team its second straight Duneland Athletic Conference loss 13-9.

“We didn’t come up with runs after their big innings,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “If nothing else, get a run or two and you can take a deep breath.”

Haley Hodges hit a solo home run in the top of the first for a 1-0 led, but the Trojans answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Mallory McKee and Shelby Carter got leadoff singles and Sydney Cooley reached on an error to load the bases. Amanda Dujmovich’s single scored McKee and Carter.

Jill Bohnert’s fielder’s choice put the Trojans on top 3-1.

The Indians pounded out four doubles in the third inning on their way to six runs and answered that rally themselves with three more runs in the fourth for a 10-3 lead.

Megan Matheny’s RBI single in the fourth scored McKee to cut the Indians’ lead to 10-4.

Another three runs for Portage in the fifth set up one final charge for the Trojans in the seventh.

Matheny reached on an error to start the frame and Cooley followed with a single. Dujmovich’s single to center loaded the bases before a Megan Tymorek grand slam to center field cut the lead to 13-8.

Sarah Richards singled to right field with one out and moved to second on an error. McKee’s single to left plated Richards, but it was too little, too late.
