Taylor Harlow did everything she could to help her team win.
The senior hit a grand slam home run and pitched a complete-game as the
Chesterton softball team won a Duneland Athletic Conference contest 6-2 on
Friday over Michigan City.
“I thought Taylor had a nice outing tonight,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson
said. “Our younger people on defense had some miscues, but our more
experienced players picked them up. Jaren (Lynch) had a real nice game at
short.”
The Wolves scored the game’s first run when Kaitlyn Shebel reached on an
error and scored on Jamieka Collins’ RBI single.
The Trojans didn’t waste much time getting the lead though. Megan Tymorek
got a lead off single and Heather Overla followed with a one-out single.
Sydney Cooley loaded the bases with a two-out hit just before Harlow blasted
a shot over the leftfield fence for a grand slam and a lead she never gave
up.
Sydney Cooley put the finishing touches on the scoring with a two-run home
run in the fifth inning that plated Jeannette Sosnowski after her leadoff
single.
“Some people believe that we beat Michigan City on two bad pitches that led
to home runs,” Hopson said. “I believe we filled the bases up with people
hitting the ball well and they scored on two home runs. If the bases weren’t
full of runners, the home runs don’t do much damage.
“We had runners on in every inning but the fourth.”
In the circle, Harlow scattered seven hits and struck out four, without
allowing a walk, to get the victory.
