Mia Pak has been named Duneland Athletic Conference MVP in gymnastics on a
vote by the league’s coaches.
Pak, a member of
the three-time defending State champion Trojans, was joined on the team by
senior Sophie Hunzelman and sophomore Caitlyn Cook.
“Our trio of
all-around girls have led our team in scoring all year,” Chesterton coach
Dawn Matthys said. “They are very dedicated to their team and sport.”
Pak was the
individual state champion on bars this year.
“Mia is our top
scorer,” Matthys said. “She’s been so happy to compete all events this year
and is so easy to coach and work with. She loves gymnastics.”
Hunzelman won the
state all-around title as a freshman and sophomore.
“Sophie has her
senior leadership skills in place,” Matthys said. “She has quietly led her
team for four years with her talent and her drive for perfection.”
Cook moved her way
into the Trojans’ top three after an off-season of hard work.
“Caitlyn came in
this season with a fire,” Matthys said. “She wanted to compete all-around on
the varsity. She’s super coachable and respectful. Plus, she’s fun and happy
all the time.”
Other members of
the all-conference team included Paige Hein (Crown Point), Maddie Bugg (Lake
Central), Cloe Amanatidis (Lake Central), Briana Thomas (Merrillville),
Bobbie Russell (Portage), Lexy Malamatos (Valparaiso), Sabrina Falk
(Valparaiso) and Megan Wagenblast (Valparaiso).
