Travis Grayson took
it upon himself.
The junior guard
scored 36 points, including 11-of-12 from the foul line, to lead the
Chesterton boys basketball team to a 62-50 non-conference victory over
Hammond Morton on Tuesday night.
“When we were able
to get stops and Travis got downhill, he was really effective,” Chesterton
coach Marc Urban said. “He was able to finish at the rim against contact
and, at his size, that’s something he has to be able to do. He scored the
ball really well tonight.”
Hammond Morton
jumped out to a 7-2 lead and led 17-15 after one quarter as the Governors
hit 7-of-9 shots from the field, including three 3-pointers.
“This was a great
lesson for us. The first half they punched us in the mouth and I was happy
with the way we responded,” Urban said. “We know we’re going to get
everybody’s best shot and we embrace that. We have been so focused on us
getting better that we helped off some guys you can’t help off of. To their
credit, they shot the ball well.”
An 8-0 Chesterton
run that included four points from Grayson gave the Trojans their first lead
at 23-19.
“I thought we tried
to blow the out on the first side of the floor early in the game,” Urban
said. “We’re really good when the ball moves, people move and the ball goes
inside-out. When we get into conference play, we have to get the ball to the
third side to get good shots.”
A 10-2 run to start
the third quarter pushed the lead to double figures and the Trojans were
never challenged again.
Chesterton hit on
23-of-49 shots (47 percent) from the field and held Morton to just 12-of-35
shooting (34 percent) over the final three quarters.
Rounding out the
scoring for CHS were Tyler Vanderwoude (10 points), Charlie Eaton (7
points), Justin Sims (5 points) and Chris Mullen (4 points).
