Nobody really wanted to run on Saturday. And Chesterton girls track coach
Steve Kearney knew it.
“This would’ve been a terrible day to have practice,” Kearney said. “If we
had brought the team out in this and said, ‘We’re going to have practice
today,’ would it have been glum or what?
“We got to line it up and race. It was competitive and some of the times
weren’t as good, but they need to know that they can run in these
conditions.”
The Trojans won four events in the 8th Annual Chesterton Relays on Saturday
behind solid performances from the hurdlers and jumpers.
Chesterton took top honors in the Shuttle Hurdles (1:12.71) by the quartet of
Brianne Guardiola, Macenzie Schoenfelt, Kirstyn Nallenweg and Chelsea
Gustafson. The trio of Guardiola, Nallenweg and Gustafson also won the 3x300
Hurdle Relay (2:38.75).
“The Shuttle Hurdlers were only two seconds off the school record in these
conditions,” Kearney said. “The hurdlers were really outstanding today. Both
those relays were great.
“I think the performance of the meet was probably Brianne (Guardiola) in the
300 Hurdles up until the last 10 meters.”
The other two victories by the Trojans came in the High Jump and Long Jump
Relays. In the Long Jump, the trio of Katie McColly, Mallory Przybylinski and
Marissa Crafton went 47 feet, 9 1¦4 inches.
“The jumpers did really well,” Kearney said. “You don’t want to look at their
numbers because of the weather, but the long jumpers had the three best jumps
of the meet.”
In the High Jump, Rachel Crawford, Chrissy Watts and Caroline Black combined
to jump 14 feet, 8 inches to best second place Munster by eight inches.
“Rachel jumping 5-2 in the high jump was really impressive today too,”
Kearney said. “She had the best jump of the day by four inches.”
The Trojan sprinters also finished second in the 4x100 (Bailey Huddleston,
Przybylinski, Becky Lewis and McColly), the 4x400 (Katie Behrendt, Paige
Kadish, Shauna Foor and Przybylinski) and the 4x200 (Przybylinski, McColly,
Crafton and Lewis).
“Especially for the sprinters, I thought we did a pretty good job of running
fast in the cold,” Kearney said. “When the weather finally breaks next week,
we should really be ready to fly.”
Kearney also mentioned several other nice runs on a windy and cold day.
“There were some kids that stepped up today,” Kearney said. “Milana Socha ran
a really nice 1,200 in the Distance Medley. We had three of our top four 800
runners gone and we stayed competitive with some kids that just went out and
competed well.”
Chesterton returns to the track on Tuesday when they travel to Valparaiso to
take on the host Vikings and Portage beginning at 4:30 p.m.
