Fresh off another undefeated run to a DAC title, the Chesterton girls tennis team will try to stay perched on top of the area as the 2013 season begins Saturday morning against West Lafayette at 10:30 a.m.

“We’ll have a good season,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said. “We need some people to step up that may not have the experience yet. They’ll have to get it quick and play well.

“We were undefeated in conference last year and we have a chance to perform at that level again.”

The Trojans return four starters from last year’s lineup, including Meg Modesto and Margaret Shinn at the top of the singles lineup.

“We have four returning starters and 6-7 girls fighting for the other varsity spots,” Shinn said. “We may not have a set lineup and play the hot hand.”

Modesto and Shinn will consistently stay at the top, the order just hasn’t been determined yet.

“Meg and Margaret are at the top of the lineup,” Shinn said. “I don’t know where yet because Meg beat Margaret earlier this week and the next day Margaret beat Meg. They are very evenly matched and push each other in practice.”

JJ Lee will sport the No. 3 singles spot most of the season, but is versatile enough to play in the doubles lineup as needed.

“JJ gives us a lot of options,” Shinn said. “She’s played singles at the varsity level and she’s got doubles experience for us too. Depending who we play, we’ll put her in the best place to get us a point.”

The other returning starter is senior Rachel McCrum.

“Rachel will have to anchor our No. 1 doubles team,” Shinn said. “We’ve got a lot of inexperience that has to fill those spots, so we’ll need her to step up her game and leadership for us.”

The rest of the Trojans battling for varsity spots include Molly McCoy, Ellen Kerr, Abby Burke, Natalie Petro, Katie Sikora and Kathryn Ausema.

“There’s some athleticism in that group and get them some experience and confidence,” Shinn said. “If we work hard and stay focused, we’ve got a chance to be as good as anybody.”
