The names may not be the same as the past, but the cupboard isn’t bare.

The Chesterton girls tennis team doesn’t have a Modesto or Shinn for the first time in recent history, but the Trojans do have some talent back as the 2014 season opens in West Lafayette on Saturday.

“We are young, but have people back with some experience,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said. “Our lineup will probably change several times during the year as we try to figure out just what works best for us.”

JJ Lee will handle duties at the top of the singles lineup.

“JJ has huge shoes to fill and she’ll give it her all,” Shinn said. “Abby Burke will play No. 2 singles and we’re not sure right now about third singles.”

The Trojans do have experience back in Lee and Burke, along with Ellen Kerr and Natalie Petro. Kathryn Ausema and Logan Haussman also were varsity letterwinners last year.

“We have a lot of girls that worked really hard in the offseason and got better,” Shinn said. “They’ll challenge for spots and that makes things very competitive in practice. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.”
