On paper it doesn’t look like the dominating performance it
appeared to be with the naked eye, but the Chesterton girls swim team had
little trouble in picking up the Highland Invitational top spot on Saturday.
The Trojans scored 347 points to top second-place Munster
(276.5). Crown Point was third (247) with Lake Central (157), Portage
(153.5), Valparaiso (113), Highland (43) and Michigan City (31) following.
“I was pretty pleased overall,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel
said. “We had some great swims and some not-so-great swims, but we beat a
good field. This is a pretty prestigious meet, so I feel pretty good about
it.”
Olivia Kabacinski was the lone Trojan to pick up two
individual event victories. The freshman took the top spot in the 200 Free
(1:54.92) and the 100 Breast (1:06.16).
“Olivia did her thing and broke a pool record in the
breaststroke,” Kinel said. “She was a little off her times, but when you’re
that far ahead, it’s hard sometimes.”
The Trojans also got individual victories from Brittany
Fozkos (50 Free) and Meaghan McLaughlin (100 Fly).
“Meaghan was solid in the IM and had a best time in the Fly
(59.8),” Kinel said. “That’s the first time she’s broke a minute this year.
That’s a tremendous swim.”
Fozkos’ win in the 50 Free was the top half of a 1-2 finish
with teammate Mallory Przybylinski.
“Brittany and Mallory going 1-2 in the 50 Free in 24.5 and
24.6 was nice,” Kinel said. “Brittany’s backstroke was 59.9 and Mallory came
back with a lifetime best 100 Free (55.63). She really swam great.”
The Trojans also got solid efforts from Maddie Miller, Lauren
Foor, Milana Socha and Elizabeth Eberhart according to Kinel.
“Maddie Miller had a great meet,” Kinel said. “She had a nice
200 IM time and had a best 100 Back time. Then, she led off our ‘B’ 400
Relay with a 55.5. Lauren Foor and Milana Socha were both steady too.
“Elizabeth Eberhart had two good times in the Fly and had a
season-best in the 100 Back.”
Chesterton won two-of-three Relays with the quartet of Fozkos,
Kabacinski, McLaughlin and Przybylinski taking top honors in the 200 Medley
Relay (1:49.47). Przybylinski, Shauna Foor, Socha and Kavacinski won the 200
Free Relay (1:39.64).
“Our Relays were solid, both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ groups,” Kinel
said. “We finished in the top six, so our second group beat a lot of the
other teams ‘A’ groups.”
The Trojans return to the pool on Tuesday when they host Lake
Central beginning at 6 p.m. before hosting the DAC Meet next Saturday.
“We still have a lot of things to work on, but the end of the
year is coming on fast,” Kinel said. “We were pretty solid and I think
that’s a nice springboard into the conference meet next weekend.”
