Experience and expectations.

Those are the words most often heard around the Chesterton girls soccer program as the 2017 season gets underway tonight when the Trojans host Michigan City.

“We return a lot of girls with a lot of varsity experience,” Chesterton coach Jason Conway said. “We’ve got a big senior class and a lot of those girls have been on varsity since their sophomore year. These girls expect to win the Sectional and the DAC. Those are attainable.

“They want to move past the Regional and they are working hard to put themselves in a position to do that.”

Up top, the Trojans have to replace a lot of goals from last season and the trio of senior Carley Perkins, freshman Addy Joiner and junior Olivia Hansen should provide that.

“Up top with Carley Perkins and Addy Joiner we expect to have a lot of opportunities to score,” Conway said. “I think with those two and (Olivia) Hansen, playing right in front of the goal, they’ll score plenty of goals between them. Those three work very well together.”

In the midfield, Hansen will get help from senior Courtney Krol, while senior Madi Callaway will run things in the defensive third.

“Defensively, Madi Callaway leads the way for us,” Conway said. “She’s been the anchor in the back for years now.”

In goal, Conway is waiting to see who emerges in a battle between seniors Christine Jackson and Molly McLaughlin.

“It’s still a competition in goal,” Conway said. “They really push each other.”
