Dimitri Nicholson sets record in 100; Trojans Sectional Track runnerup

Dimitri Nicholson might be new to track, but the Chesterton junior has his routine down before every race.

“I’m always a little nervous when I get in the blocks, but then I take a deep breath and I just start smiling,” Nicholson said after Thursday’s sectional track and field meet at Portage. “I get set and then I hear the gun. I have no idea what happens. I just go.”

Go Nicholson did; all the way to sectional history.

Nicholson won the 100 meter dash in a time of 10.73 seconds, breaking a 36-year-old record held by Michigan City Elston’s Glover Edwards (11.06). Nicholson got off to a fast start in the preliminaries, but finished slower than four of his competitors with a time of 11.35 seconds. He wasn’t slow when it came time for the finals.

“I knew after the start that I could do something special,” Nicholson said. “I didn’t even know (how fast), I passed the finish line and I thought it was a really good time. Then I heard it was a sectional record and I got chills down everywhere. It was great.”

Nicholson joined Chesterton’s track team last winter after “people around school” convinced him to stop by coach Bryan Nallenweg’s office to ask if he could join the team. It didn’t take long for Nallenweg to realize he had a potential star on his hands.

“Those first days of winter workouts, it was just ‘holy smokes,’ you could see something special here,” Nallenweg said.

Nicholson added a victory in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.21 seconds and the junior finished third in the long jump. After dominating the competition on the track, Nicholson had to reprogram his mind a bit to compete in the long jump pit.

“I get really competitive and I know that,” Nicholson said. “I like winning and I have been working hard to be a better loser. I have to get used to the fact that there will be people better than me at everything and I just have to appreciate the wins more than dwell on the losses.”

Nicholson was also part of the 4x100 relay team that took second place behind Portage. The Trojans began the event by winning the 4x800 relay (8:21.47) as Matthew Van Kley, Kenny Erow, Will Shook and Matt Streeter combined to beat Valparaiso by less than six seconds.

The Trojans took second place in the team competition, falling just short of champion Portage by a score of 130-122. Valparaiso finished in third place with 110 points. The Vikings will host regionals next Thursday with the state finals being held in Bloomington on Friday, May 31.

“Next week is the big show,” Nallenweg said. “Right now we’re keeping the guys focused. They understand how big regionals are. We have a lot of guys that have a shot to do something special next week. That’s our focus right now.”
