CHESTERTON - Chesterton High School held its annual Spring Sports Award Banquet Tuesday night in the CHS Auditorium, honoring athletes, coaches and trainers for their hard work and dedication.

Taking home top honors with Athlete of the Year trophies were softball and soccer star Laura DeLeon, and three-sport sensations Matt Maple and Casey Martin.

DeLeon, the senior ace pitcher of the Lady Trojans softball team, who recently led the girls in maroon and gold to their first sectional title since 1994, has a list of athletic and academic accomplishments second to none.

She has received scholar-athlete awards all four years and currently has a grade point average of 3.83.

On the softball diamond, DeLeon holds the single season record for no-hit games, shutouts, perfect games, strike outs and fewest hits allowed.

She also has the career record for no-hit games and perfect games thrown.

She has been named to the Duneland Athletic All-Conference the past two seasons, and was honorable mention all-state as a junior.

This year, DeLeon became the second player in school-history (Debbie Lang, 1988) to be named first team All-State and she will pitch for the North team in the Indiana All-Star Softball Game later this month.

In soccer, DeLeon has won two varsity letters, a most improved award and has been a part of Chestertonís Duneland Athletic Conference, Sectional, Regional, Semistate and Final Four Championship teams.

DeLeon will take her 16-1-1 record to the mound on Saturday at the Elkhart Memorial Regional when Chesterton takes on South Bend Adams in the second semifinal starting at 1 p.m. with a potential match-up against defending state champ and undefeated Lake Central or Penn in the championship.

DeLeon plans on attending Loyola University in Chicago this fall.

Martin and Maple have not only excelled in football, baseball and basketball, but in the classrooms as well. Both were named co-captains in all three of their sports and combined have 14 scholar athlete awards and 17 varsity letters.

Maple was the assist leader in basketball and was named the defensive MVP. He also won the coveted Trojan Award as a junior and a senior. He brought back MVP honors as a junior and senior in football and received all-state recognition as the Trojans top wide receiver and defensive back.

Martin has been named most valuable in both football and baseball, and was the leading rebounder on the Trojans basketball team the past two seasons. He was also Chestertonís RBI leader the past two seasons in baseball.

He also received all-state recognition in football and baseball, and will be attending Indiana State University in the fall to continue his baseball career.

Both Martin and Maple led the Trojans baseball team to a sectional title in 2004.

Martin also shared the back the Most Valuable Player Award in baseball this season with Nick Chase, while Maple earned the Sportsmanship Award.

Other MVP Awards were given to Adam Martin (Boys Track), Ethan Newham (Boys Field), Jessica Pesut (Girls Field), Sarah Kehe (Girls Track), Brittany Cooley (Girls Tennis), Sam Chumbley and Alex Cook (Boys Golf).

Mental Attitude Award winners were Amy Dreischerf and Lynn Gackowski (Girls Tennis), Maggie Sharpe (Girls Track), Ken Frank and John Torabi (Boys Track), J.D. Williamson (Baseball), and Ryan Kokesh and Steve St. Germain (Boys Golf).

Other special awards were given to Jon Schwoegler (Baseball - James A. Arvin Award), Jayson Jeffries and John Lambert (Baseball - Kurt E. Ruoff Memorial Award), Nick Chase (Baseball - David Sayka Scholarship Award) and Max Goldak (Boys Track - Josh Phillips Memorial Award).

Softball awards will be distributed at the conclusion of their season.

Also honored Tuesday night were Athletic Trainer Kim Stento and softball assistant coach Kevin Gates, who both have decided to step aside from their respective positions at Chesterton High School.

Stento, a Valparaiso High School graduate who came to Chesterton from a small college in Pennsylva-nia, was CHSís first certified athletic trainer nine years ago.

She was welcomed with a standing ovation and presented a plaque for her commitment.

Gates, an assistant coach under his sister LouAnn Hopson the past 21 years on the softball diamond, has also decided to leave to spend more time with his family.

He was also presented a plaque after being named the District One Assistant Coach of the Year.

In all, Chestertonís sports team accumulated three sectional championships (Girls Tennis, Track and Softball) and a pair of regional championships (Girls Track and Tennis) so far this spring with four teams still active with hopes of bringing back more hardware.

Also, first year assistant girls tennis coach Mike Styles was announced as the new boys tennis coach after Brian Norris stepped down this past fall.
