After an undefeated campaign and the school’s first State Championship, the Chesterton boys soccer team has a bullseye square on its back as the 2019 campaign starts tonight.

The Trojans will open their title defense against Boone Grove at CHS. The JV game, against Kankakee Valley, is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.

“We have to battle the idea of being the top dog in the area,” Chesterton head coach Lucas Sabedra said. “We know we’ll get everybody’s best game. We know what the big games are. We have to make sure we show up for all the other one’s too. That’s how you get caught.”

The Trojans return eight starters from last year’s 21-0-2 team and should be set up to score a lot of goals.

Seth Conway and Zack Bowser will spearhead the charge up front, while Ryan O’Dell, Robbie Capehart, Joey Stark and Soren Vagenius also will be counted on.

“I think our offense is going to be our best defense,” Sabedra said. “I believe we’ll even be better offensively than we were last year, because those guys are all a year older. They are confident, more creative and good off the ball.”

Nick Biel solidifies the midfield and will be counted on heavily offensively and defensively.

“We’ve got a lot of the same team coming back, but its very different in a lot of ways,” Sabedra said. “There are a lot of things we have to reconfigure and find out the identity of this team.”

In the back, the final line of defense will be solid with Charlie Eaton returning in goal.

“Charlie is one of the best goalkeeper’s in the State,” Sabedra said. “His athleticism is off the charts and he’s very vocal. He’s one of the loudest people on the field and now we have to teach him to tell the people in front of him what he wants and how to do it the right way.”

In front of Eaton may be the only early season question mark.

“The back line we’ve been messing around with her early on,” Sabedra said. “We’ve been experimenting a lot and have a pretty good idea of what we want to do back there.”
