The Chesterton wrestling team racked up eight individual titles and cruised to the IHSAA Sectional Championship at LaPorte on Saturday.

“This was our goal from the beginning of the year,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “We thought with the schedule we had all year that it would be an advantage for us against the competition we would see in the Sectional.

“We put a lot of time in the room and felt like we were prepared and proved that today.”

The Trojans scored 291 points to beat second place LaPorte (210). New Prairie was third (190) and Michigan City was fourth (150).

“We only brought 13 guys, they all advanced, and I think we only had four losses total,” Joll said. “We work really hard at being in better shape than people. We’re pretty confident that when we come in here, we can stay with anybody.”

Chesterton first title came at 113 pounds as Josh Jensen pinned LaPorte’s Skyler Gomes (5:45). Jack Tolin backed that up with the title at 120 with a 16-3 victory over North Judson’s Steven Smith.

“Nice to have Jack Tolin back and wrestling well,” Joll said. “He wrestled pretty well today for having had such a long break. I’m really proud of him.”

The Trojans got back on the gold haul with a win at 138 from Diego Lemley by injury default just before Dontae Rodriguez beat LaVille’s Bryant Hunsberger in :45 at 145.

Luke Zelenika garnered the fifth title of the day with a pin of LaPorte’s Tyler Schoof at 2:40.

“I’ve never had more than three champs at one time since I’ve been at Chesterton,” Joll said. “Putting eight guys up on the top step at Awards was pretty good.”

Jack Davison battled from the No. 3 seed to beat top-seeded Ben Norton of LaVille 10-8 in the finals at 170 pounds.

“Jack Davison wrestles hard guys all the time,” Joll said. “He always seems to have the toughest road and just comes through it. That’s what he gets for being the oldest boy in that family of knuckleheads I guess. He’s used to it.”

Sophomore brother Andrew Davison had little trouble in pinning Michigan City’s Matt Schoof at 182 pounds, while Danny Cutter wrangled the final title with a 2-1 win over Jose Salinas of LaPorte at 220.

“Some of our guys had some success even though they struggled in conference matches and dual meets,” Joll said. “With the program that we have, they know they are still pretty good wrestlers. That’s nice to see and a reward for the hard work they’ve put in to the last month.”

The Trojans also wrestled to a pair of runner-up finishes with Davielle Stewart (195 pounds) and Lucas Davison (170 pounds).

Third place finishers included Cade Girgenti (126 pounds), Stephen Biancardi (132 pounds) and David Stover (285 pounds).

“Thought we got a great performance from Stephen Biancardi to get third by beating some guys that had beat us before,” Joll said. “David Stover lost a one-point match to the champ at heavyweight and that’s a nice improvement for a kid that played football and never wrestled before. He stayed after it and kept working.”

Chesterton will return to the mat next Saturday for the IHSAA Regional at Crown Point beginning at 9 a.m.

“It helps going to Regionals being a champ, but it gives us a chance to have nine or 10 guys win their first round match and get to Semistate,” Joll said. “We want a lot of guys to go deep into the post-season, so let’s put our boots on and get going.”
