The Chesterton wrestling team picked up its first Duneland Athletic Conference victory with a 49-20 Senior Night win over Portage on Thursday night.

“There isn’t enough room to write all the good things that can be said about this group of seniors,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “By the end of the season, the CHS wrestling record book will have to have several chapters rewritten.”

The Trojans got off to a hot start with fall victories from Cade Johnson (170), Gavin Layman (182) and Evan Bates (220). Gage DeMarco added a forfeit win at 195 for a 24-0 lead.

Following a pair of Portage wins, Hayden DeMarco put Chesterton back on the scoreboard with a fall victory at 113.

Sergio Lemley (126) and Aidan Torres (132) both got wins before Brock Ellis (152) won by fall and Brandon Bolin (160) won by decision to set the final score.

“The accomplishments of these guys show how far a group can get when they work hard, stay together and have great parents as role models,” Joll said. “It will be a long time before Chesterton has a group like this representing them.”
