The goal sounded
simple at face value.
After winning nine
individual titles, a third straight team title in the IHSAA LaPorte
Sectional was just a formality Saturday for the Chesterton wrestling team.
“Our goal was to
win as many individual weight classes as possible,” Chesterton coach Chris
Joll said. “Along with that, includes winning the team title. We had 10 guys
in the Finals and only lost one. That’s pretty good.”
The Trojans title
haul started at 106 pounds when Danny Tolin beat LaPorte’s Ian Nelson 14-2
in the finals.
“We trained through
the week with some guys, including Danny because we knew he only had the one
match,” Joll said. “We didn’t taper for today and some of them looked a
little flat. You just have to tough it out and for the most part we did
Jack Tolin picked
up his fourth straight Sectional championship with a tech fall win over
Michigan City’s David Taylor at 132 pounds.
“Jack getting his
fourth Sectional title is quite an accomplishment,” Joll said.
continued the Trojans’ reign with a fall victory over North Judson’s Zach
Bridegroom at 138 pounds.
“Steve has been
nursing an injury,” Joll said. “In the finals, he gave the kid a false sense
of security and threw the kid to his back and pinned him. We had a definite
conditioning edge. We’ll just keep riding that horse.”
At 152 pounds, Ryne
Beckman won his first Sectional title with a pin win against New Prairie’s
Austin Lesniak. It was the start of six straight individual weight class
victories for the Trojans.
“Ryne got his first
(Sectional title),” Joll said. “Ryne got taken down and then started coming
back. He cradled a kid, put him up in the air and the kid got away. We told
him to get a wrist, get a half and make it work. He did exactly that.”
Diego Lemley won by
tech fall at 160 pounds and Cade Girgenti beat LaPorte’s Noah Perez at 170
“Our younger guys
are still being young and our big guys are still being big,” Joll said. “The
middle guys are closing the gap. Overall, that’s a good day.”
Lucas Davison (182
pounds) and Andrew Davison (195 pounds) remained undefeated on the season
with fall victories and Eli Pokorney beat LaPorte’s Kyle Simpkins by pin to
win at 220 pounds.
“The Davison’s and
Eli just went bam, bam, bam and the day was over,” Joll said. “That’s what
they do. They have bigger goals ahead of them.”
to the mat at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the IHSAA Crown Point Regional.
“We haven’t seen
several of the teams that are there so if we have to wrestle one of those
guys, we’ll just show up and do our best,” Joll said. “Some guys we’ll set
up this week to be ready for Saturday and others will train right through
it. Whatever is best for each kid.”
