The Chesterton Trojans wrestled for a DAC Title in five weight classes and finished fourth overall as a team Saturday at CHS.

Crown Point won the overall team title (245.5) and were followed by Merrillville (210.5), Portage (195.5) and the Trojans (145).

“We had five kids wrestle very well to get to the Finals,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “We lost, but in all those cases I think we are right there with them. What’s going on out on the mat is a reflection of what’s going on in the (Wrestling) room.

“It’s my responsibility to get them to the next level and I dropped the ball on that.”

Finalists for the Trojans included Zack Thornton (125), Chris Katsafaros (130), Brandon Garvey (152), Anthony Quiroz (160) and Tony Sanchez (171).

“They all did about the way I expected them to do today,” Joll said. “I guess I should have set my expectations a little higher.”

After a reversal in the third period to tie the score at 4-4, Merrillville’s Anthony Napules escaped with just over 30 seconds left to pick up a 5-4 victory at 125 over Thornton. Thornton won his other two matches by fall.

“Zack beat a kid in the semi’s that looked like they wanted nothing to do with us,” Joll said.

Katsafaros tech falled both of his opponents before running into undefeated Jason Tsirtsis of Crown Point in the Finals at 130. At 152, Crown Point’s Tommy Renn outlasted Garvey 8-6 in the Finals.

The day’s marquee match-up came at 160 in a repeat of last year’s State Championship match at 152 between undefeated Sean McMurray of Portage and previously undefeated Quiroz.

McMurray took control early in the match with a pair of takedowns and went on to an 11-2 victory that was followed by some pushing and shoving and the wrestlers being separated by coaches.

At 171, Sanchez escaped from the clutches of Merrillville’s Jeremy Wengel in the third period, but gave up a takedown in the final five seconds of the match to fall 3-1. Sanchez picked up a fill by fall in the opening round and a decision in the semifinals.

“Tony gutted through a tough LaPorte kid in the semifinals,” Joll said. “He made a little mistake at the end and that’s something we can fix.”

The Trojans also got solid performances in several other spots.

“I saw some really good individual efforts in some matches,” Joll said. “I’m not happy with where everyone placed, but I thought everyone had a place where they excelled and did a nice job.”

Joll pointed to a few specifics.

“Vinny (Qurioga) had a couple of nice wins to get fifth place (at 189),” Joll said. “Joe Kelly wrestled in the toughest weight class here today and finished fifth, but could’ve been in the Finals.

“Will Butz wrestled well and finished sixth and that sounds silly, but it’s true. Those are guys who got better today.”
