CHS Volleyball finishes runnerup in Invite

The Chesterton volleyball team finished runner-up in the CHS Invitational on Saturday.

In morning pool play, the Trojans beat Kokomo 25-22, 25-10 and Michigan City City Marquette 25-14, 25-18. In the afternoon, CHS beat Portage 25-17, 25-19 before falling to eventual champion Boone Grove 25-21, 25-20.

Offensively, Maggie Vrahoretis led the Trojans with 18 kills, while Meghan Gaffigan added 15 kills. Sydney Baltus, Emma Ekblaw and Brooke Smith all tallied eight kills on the day. Maddie Wagner recorded seven kills.

Vivi Smilgius dished out a team-best 43 assists and Vrahoretis tallied 24 helpers.

Defensively, AJ Devereaux led the Trojans with 28 digs and Greta Tilden recorded 22 digs. McKenna Guernsey (12), Smilgius (11) and Vrahoretis (10) all hit double figures in digs.

At the net, Ekblaw had four blocks with Ella Rodriguez adding three blocks. Reese Czarniecki and Meghan Gaffigan each had two blocks.

On the service line, Devereaux had a team-high 11 aces with Baltus adding six aces. Ekblaw had four aces, while Smilgius and Vrahoretis had three aces each.

The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they host Merrillville. The JV game is set for a 5 p.m. start.
