The Chesterton girls tennis team completed its perfect run through Duneland
Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 victory at LaPorte on Thursday.
With the win, the Trojans won the outright DAC title.
“It feels good,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said. “We didn’t know if we
were going to be good enough to pull this off. We’re thrilled, but we know
the Sectional is right around the corner.”
Meg Modesto was first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles
against Caroline Boger.
“Meg’s been playing for so long and has played in so many tournaments that
all her experience has really helped her,” Shinn said.
Not to be outdone, Margaret Shinn at No. 2 singles and JJ Lee at No. 3
singles won by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores to set the final score.
“We’re putting a lot of pressure on those three singles kids, but they’ve
really come through all year for us,” Shinn said. “
Doubles play was not completed due to rain with the Trojan duo of Kathryn
Ausema and Logan Haussman up 6-4, 2-3 at No. 2 and Rachel McCrum and Ellen
Kerr tied at 6-6 at No. 1.
“We still have to get better at doubles,” Shinn said. “They are really
working at it, but there is still work to do there.”
