Sunshine definitely put some pep into the Chesterton girls’ tennis team Saturday as the Trojans opened the 2011 season by splitting matches against West Lafayette and Lafayette Jefferson.

The Trojans first lost to West Lafayette (4-1), but followed with a victory over Lafayette Jefferson (4-1) to end the day.

“This morning was a very deep team [West Lafayette],” Chesterton Coach Gretchen Shinn said. “They have a new freshman that is probably top-five in the State.”

The morning competition was fierce. At No. 2 singles, Margaret Shinn was the only Chesterton winner with a straight-set victory over Courtney Coakes, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2 in the tiebreak).

“Bobbi going three sets this morning could have gone either way,” said Shinn. “Starting the season off with a 4-1 loss is tough. We just need to build off this and work our way through the year.”

Against Lafayette Jefferson, No. 1 singles player Bobbi Modesto started the afternoon off with a double 6-0 score to crush senior Tess Boutselis.

“The second match of the day was definitely the best,” Shinn said. “We played harder and better than the morning games.”

Freshman J.J Lee accomplished another win for the Trojans, dropping the first set 6-2, before rebounding with 6-3 and 6-2 victories.

Chesterton’s other victories were at No. 2 doubles with Sunny Lee and Amanda Susnak against Lafayette Jefferson’s Meredith Johnson and Laura Alverman 6-2, 6-3 and Shinn winning at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Meher Taleyarkham.

Singles – 1. Bobbi Modesto (C) def. Tess Boutselis 6-0, 6-0; 2. Margaret Shinn (C) def. Meher Taleyarkhan 6-0, 6-1; 3. J.J Lee (C) def. Yvette Jara 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Doubles – 1. Krystal Cunningham-Brianne Hinds (L.J) def. Brittny Stephan-Lauren Sergent 6-4, 6-4; Sunny Lee-Amanda Susnak (C) def. Meredith Johnson-Laura Alverman 6-2, 6-3.
