Members of the Chesterton High School Boys and Girls Swimming teams and the Girls Golf team were honored Wednesday, March 20, for their recent successes at the state level.

This event is sponsored by local business owners who recognize the efforts and achievements of these local student athletes.

The night began with dinner at Sand Creek Country Club and was filled with fellowship and conversation between the student athletes and the event sponsors and the respective coaches talked about their teamsí achievements.

Specifically, Coach Dale Hewitt recognized Kelly Grassel as the 2012 Girls Golf State Champion, a feat she repeated from 2011. Grassel was also named the 2012 Mental Attitude Award winner at state by the IHSAA. Hewitt shared that the Girls Golf Team has a core of four seniors, Nicole Dutz, Kelly Grassel, Jennifer Kattalia and Marissa Kroeger, who have achieved an astounding record of 47-0 during their four year run.

Swim Coach Kevin Kinel highlighted the achievements of the Boys Swimming team, starting off with their 2013 State Championship. This is the third time Chesterton has earned a State Title.

State records were set by Aaron Whitaker (100M Butterfly and 100M Backstroke), Blake Peroni (100M Freestyle), and the 400M Freestyle Relay team of Peroni, Ethan Whitaker, Patrick Curley and Aaron Whitaker. Coach Kinel said that while there was plenty of individual success the State Championship was truly a team effort. Then Kinel recognized the achievements of the Girls Swimming team, which placed Fifth in the State. Their season was highlighted by fourth place finishes at State by Vanessa Krause (50M Freestyle and 100M Butterfly) and the third place finish in the 400M Freestyle Relay team comprised of Vanessa Krause, Julia Campbell, Kate Curley and Kelly Craig.
