The storylines from the spring sports season at Chesterton High School,
although not finished yet, brought performances that could headline any
newspaper in the state.
The CHS softball teams list of accomplishments reads like the state’s top
team, which they have been for nearly six weeks. The Trojans have won 27
straight games since an opening night loss to Lowell earning the No. 1
ranking in Class 4A. They became the first Trojan softball team to go
undefeated in the DAC en route to a league title.
Coach LouAnn Hopson’s team also won the Sectional title last week and will
play South Bend Riley Saturday at the Merrillville Regional at 10 a.m.
The girls track team will send 17 participants in 10 events to Friday’s
state championship meet in Bloomington. The Trojans won their second
consecutive DAC title, a seventh straight Sectional title and their third
Regional title in four years.
The boys track team will send its 4x800 team and senior Adam Martin (1,600)
to the state finals, while the boys golf team will compete in the Sectional
on Friday at Forest Park in Valparaiso fresh off their second place finish
in the DAC Meet on Tuesday.
The girls tennis team advanced to the Sectional final before falling 3-2 to
Valparaiso and the baseball team dropped a tough 6-2 decision to No. 3
ranked Merrillville in the Sectional.
In all, eight CHS athletes were named Most Valuable to their teams including
Lynn Gackowski (Tennis), Sarah Kehe (Girls Track runner), Jessica Pesut
(Girls Track field), Sagan Newham (Girls Track field), Kyle Grassel (Golf),
Adam Martin (Boys Track runner), Curt Bradford (Boys Track field) and Jeff
Gaston (Baseball).
