Let’s try this again.

As the calendar turns to July, high school athletics are getting set to return to the practice courts and fields.

“The Duneland School Corporation administration, CHS athletic department, coaches and staff have been working together to develop a plan that allows for CHS student-athlete’s to return to the athletic fields and courts amidst the COVID-19 pandemic,” new CHS athletic director Jeff Hamstra said in a letter to parents.

All summer activities beginning Monday, July 6, until the first official practice on Aug. 3, are voluntary for student-athletes. Student-athletes are encouraged to take proper precautions during this time as well by following proper CDC guidelines such as social distancing, wearing a mask and avoiding large crowds to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Athletes intending to participate on July 6 must complete the physical paperwork located on the CHS Athletics website including the sudden cardiac arrest/concussion form, the code of conduct form and a pre-participation physical or IHSAA Health History update questionnaire.

CHS and CMS athletes who have physicals on file from the 2019-2020 school year need only to fill out the Health History Form. All students that are not in that group must have a 2020-2021 physical on the IHSAA form.

General items of note from the athletic department to individuals participating include a required COVID-19 pre-screening procedure before each activity, student-athletes must bring their own labeled water bottle and are not allowed to share and student-athletes are expected to wear their own masks when social distancing can not be observed, but will not be required to wear them during strenuous physical activity. CHS will not be providing masks for student-athletes.

Locker rooms will be unavailable and student-athletes are expected to leave campus when workouts are completed, maintaining social distancing guidelines before, during and after each activity.

Symptoms of COVID-19 student-athletes and employees should be aware of include a fever of 100 degrees or more, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat and new loss of taste or smell.

THREE-PHASE RETURN

In CHS’ three-phase return, phase one will run from July 6-19 and teams are allowed two days of activities (not back to back days) and four days of conditioning per week. No more than 15 hours per week for multi-sport athletes. All teams will practice on campus with the exception of girls golf.

No school equipment will be passed out and smaller groups (10 or less) are encouraged. There will be limited access to the CHS weight room, including no more than 20 athletes in at a time and all equipment must be cleaned after every exercise and restroom access will also be limited.

In phase two from July 20-Aug. 15, time constraints are no longer limited and groups can consist of full-team practices. Locker rooms will be available and informal scrimmages with other schools may be possible.

In phase three beginning Aug. 15, competitions are allowed with spectators and normal practice rules apply.
