CHS Softball wins Duneland Conference opener crushing Merrillville

The Chesterton softball team had little trouble in a 23-0 Duneland Athletic Conference opening victory at Merrillville on Tuesday.

“We played everyone and some in unfamiliar positions,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “Everyone hit the ball hard.”

The Trojans wasted little time and jumped on the Pirates for eight runs in the top of the first. Chesterton sent 13 batters to the plate, collecting seven hits, including a two-run home run by Sydney Cooley.

The Trojans also sent 13 hitters to the plate in the seven-run third inning and the six-run fifth inning.

Offensively, Chesterton was led by Cooley’s four hits, while Shelby Carter and Sierra LaFreniere each tallied three hits. Megan Tymorek, Megan Matheny, Mallory McKee and Lisette Martinez all had two hits.

Cooley picked up the win with 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in five innings of work.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 13, Merrillville 0

The Chesterton junior varsity softball team opened Duneland Athletic Conference play with a 13-0 victory at Merrillville on Tuesday.

Danielle Lange pitched one inning for the Trojans, recording one strikeout and issuing one walk. Olivia Smith led the offense with a single, double and four RBI’s.

The game was stopped in the top of the second inning due to an injury to a Merrillville player.

The Trojans are 5-0 thus far this season.

Earlier JV Games

Lia Lombardini pitched the first game of the double header against Mishawaka on Saturday. Lombardini had 7 strikeouts and only gave up one hit. Lombardini added two singles and a double to help the cause.

Shelby Price had two singles and scored twice. Final score was 10-0.

In the second game Nicole Bross took the mound. Bross had 3 strikeouts. Bross added two singles, a double, and a homerun to help lead the Trojans to a 13-4 victory.

Kayla Tracy had two singles and two doubles for the Trojans. Natalie Anderson had two doubles and scored.
