The Chesterton softball team pounded out 11 hits, including two home runs, as they improved 5-0 with a 9-0 victory over Hebron on Monday.

“It took a couple of innings for the bats to produce at clutch times,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “Several of our outs were rockets hit right at defenders. The girls did a great job of adjusting.”

The Trojans cracked the scoreboard in the third inning when Shelby Carter and Sydney Cooley reached with one-out singles. Megan Matheny’s home run put Chesterton on top 3-0.

Carter started the fifth with a walk and Cooley followed with a single. Carter scored when Jill Bohnert reached on an error. Mallory McKee’s single plated Cooley for a 5-0 lead.

The Trojans put the final touches on the win as Carter reached on a one-out error and scored on Cooley’s two-run home run. Matheny singled and went to second on a throwing error. After a Bohnert walk, McKee plated both with a double.

“We threatened to score in all but one inning,” Hopson said. “The two home runs were huge.”

Megan Tymorek struck out 16 and allowed just three hits in picking up the victory.

“We had three errors and Megan had three walks, but most of that happened in two innings,” Hopson said. “Aside from that, we got another good outing Megan.”

The Trojans open Duneland Athletic Conference play tonight when they travel to Merrillville for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
