The Chesterton softball team banged seven home runs in the season-opener, but dropped a 14-12 decision in nine innings to Hobart on Tuesday.

“I never would have thought we would hit seven home runs and lose a game,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We hit more home runs, but Hobart had more hits. I’m disappointed we were so badly out hit.”

The Trojans jumped on top early with three runs in the first and added another in the second for a 4-0 lead.

Chesterton led 7-2 heading into the fifth before the Brickies scored four runs in the top half of the frame. After two Trojan runs in the bottom of the fifth, Hobart tallied four more in the sixth.

“Defensively, we made a couple mistakes, but you can’t stop the stuff going back up the middle or in the gaps,” Hopson said. “It was a tough night for our pitchers, but I think they will be better for it.”

Trailing 11-10, the Brickies got a two-run double to take a 12-11 lead. Sydney Cooley’s solo home run tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.

The game-winners for Hobart came in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run.

On the night, Cooley blasted three solo home runs, while Bailey Slivka hit two solo homers. Mallory McKee also had two home runs and tallied five RBI’s in the loss.

The Trojans return to the field on Thursday when they travel to Griffith. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
