The Chesterton softball team split a pair of games in the weather-shortened Horseshoe Classic at Pendleton Heights on Saturday.

The Trojans dropped the opening game against Madison Grant 4-0 in a game shortened by rain and lightening.

“It rained from about the second inning until we had lightening at the end of the fifth,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We waited for about an hour and a half before the game was called.”

Madison Grant scored a pair of runs in the first and fourth innings on just four hits.

The Trojans had chances in the first, second and fifth innings with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and two runners on each of the other two frames.

“We walked seven times, but struck out six,” Hopson said. “We just weren’t patient at the plate.”

Against South Bend Adams, the Trojans scored two runs in the top of the first and never trailed en route to a 9-4 win.

Jaren Lynch started the game with a walk and moved to second on Heather Overla’s sacrifice bunt. Lynch scored when Sydney Cooley reached on an error. Taylor Harlow’s RBI single made the score 2-0.

After Adams scored one in the first, Chesterton added three more runs in the third.

Overla singled and Cooley reached on an error. Harlow’s two-run single scored both and courtesy runner Shelby Carter scored on Jeannette Sosnowski’s ground out.

“We got to see a few other people perform,” Hopson said. “And we found a couple more bats and some different defensive possibilities.”

In the fourth, the Trojans added two more runs when Mallory McKee doubled and courtesy runner Sarah Richards eventually scored on a wild pitch. Overla reached on a two-out single and scored on a double by Cooley.

Chesterton finished the scoring in the sixth when Cooley doubled and Megan Matheny singled to start the frame. Cooley scored on Harlow’s single and Matheny reached home on a single from Ryan Bozak.

The Trojans return to the field on Tuesday when they travel to Merrillville for a 4:30 p.m. start.
