The Chesterton softball team scored three third inning runs and Lexi Benko made it stand up.

The Trojans improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Duneland Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 shutout victory at LaPorte on Wednesday.

“I thought our defense and battery did a great job of staying focused,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “It started raining in the third inning. Pitching, fielding and making good throws was not easy.”

Cassidy Grimm and Faith Matta each singled to start the third inning rally. Maddie Snemis finished it with a two-out three-run home run. Grimm finished with two hits on the night, while Micaela Iacovetti added a double.

LaPorte had two scoring chances, but Trojan center fielder Kari LaFreniere shut them down.

The first chance ended with LaFreniere making a running catch while crashing into the outfield fence. The second came in the sixth inning when LaFreniere fielded a single up the middle with two outs and threw a strike to catcher Shelby Grimm for an out at the plate.

Lexi Benko picked up the win for the Trojans by scattering five hits and striking out six.

“Lexi threw a great game,” Hopson said. “Three of the singles were infield hits and only one ball got hit hard.”

Chesterton returns to the field tonight when they travel to Portage to face the Indians. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
