softball team scored three third inning runs and Lexi Benko made it stand
improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Duneland Athletic Conference play with a
3-0 shutout victory at LaPorte on Wednesday.
“I thought our
defense and battery did a great job of staying focused,” Chesterton coach
LouAnn Hopson said. “It started raining in the third inning. Pitching,
fielding and making good throws was not easy.”
Cassidy Grimm and
Faith Matta each singled to start the third inning rally. Maddie Snemis
finished it with a two-out three-run home run. Grimm finished with two hits
on the night, while Micaela Iacovetti added a double.
LaPorte had two
scoring chances, but Trojan center fielder Kari LaFreniere shut them down.
The first chance
ended with LaFreniere making a running catch while crashing into the
outfield fence. The second came in the sixth inning when LaFreniere fielded
a single up the middle with two outs and threw a strike to catcher Shelby
Grimm for an out at the plate.
Lexi Benko picked
up the win for the Trojans by scattering five hits and striking out six.
“Lexi threw a great
game,” Hopson said. “Three of the singles were infield hits and only one
ball got hit hard.”
