CHS Softball scores early to beat LaPorte

The Chesterton softball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for a 6-3 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at LaPorte on Tuesday.

The Trojans got on the board with four runs in the second as Marney Sisson started the rally with a one-out walk. After Faith Matta walked, Maddie Snemis ripped a single to center that scored Sisson.

Cassidy Grimm followed with a three-run home run that pushed the score to 4-0.

In the third, Micaela Iacovetti walked and moved to third before scoring on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.

The Slicers answered with one run in the bottom of the third, but Gillian Priceís home run in the fifth made it 5-1 Trojans.

LaPorte scored two runs in the sixth, but it was too little, too late.

Snemis led the Trojans offense with two hits (double), while Grimm (home run), Price (home run) and Sisson all had one hit each.

Lexi Benko worked all seven innings in the pitcherís circle and struck out five in getting the win.

Chesterton returns to the field on Thursday when they travel to Lowell for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 9, LaPorte 8

The Chesterton junior varsity picked up a come-from-behind win with a four-run, seventh inning rally.

Hannah Massey led the Trojan offense with a home run and three RBIís, while Katie Hansen (double) and Jade Lloyd each added two hits.

Massey also collected the win with 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of work.
