Back To Front Page

The Chesterton softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pick up a 7-6 come-from-behind Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Valparaiso on Monday.

After a two-run home run in the top of the seventh gave the Vikings a 6-5 lead, Lexi Benko singled with one out in the bottom of the inning. Micaela Iacovetti singled to move pinch-runner Noelle Michael to second.

Lauren Kobialka’s fielder’s choice plated Michael to tie the game at 6-6. Gillian Price singled to put runners on first and second before Kaitlyn Carr walked to load the bases.

Pinch-runner Hope Matta scored on a passed ball with the game-winning run.

Valpo opened the scoring in the third with a solo run before Chesterton responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame. Maddie Snemis singled home Faith Matta for the Trojans.

After the Vikings added three more runs in the fourth, Iacovetti started a rally with a single to center. Following a single by Kobialka and walk to Price to load the bases, Carr singled to score Iacovetti. Pinch-runner Hope Matta scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-3.

The Trojans took a 5-4 lead in the fifth as Cassidy Grimm was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Benko followed with a single to left. Iacovetti’s two-run double plated both runners.

Offensively, Iacovetti led the Chesterton attack with three hits, while Benko and Kobialka each added two hits. Snemis, Price, Carr and Faith Matta all singled in the win.

Kobialka started in the circle for the Trojans and struck out five, while Benko added two strike outs in 1 2/3 innings of relief work. Carr got the win after working the final inning.

CHS returns to the field tonight as they travel to Merrillville for a 4:30 p.m. start.
