The Chesterton softball team pounded out 13 hits and cruised to a 16-1 season-opening night victory at Hobart on Tuesday night.

The Trojans got on the board in the second inning on Kaitlyn Carr's solo home run and then again in the third when Lexi Benko doubled and moved to third on an error. Courtesy runner Mae Mallon scored on a Micaela Iacovetti ground out.

A pair of doubles for Hobart in the third cut the lead to 2-1, but opened up the flood gates for the Trojan bats.

Marney Sisson reached on an error and Faith Matta singled to get the rally started. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Maddie Snemis' fielder's choice scored Sisson. A passed ball scored Matta from third.

Cassidy Grimm was hit by a pitch and reloaded the bases. Benko's grand slam to center field pushed the lead to 8-1.

Iacovetti kept the rally going with a single and Lauren Kobialka singled to right putting runners on the corners. Carr's line drive was misplayed and the lead grew to 9-1. Sisson's ground ball plated Kobialka to finish the rally.

In the fifth, Snemis drew a walk and Grimm reached on an error. Benko's fielder's choice put runners on the corners. Snemis scored on a wild pitch as Iacovetti drew a walk.

Kobialka was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After courtesy runner Mallon scored, a ground ball single by Carr plated pinch runner Jenna Vagner and Kobialka for a 14-1 lead.

Faith Matta doubled to center to score Carr and scored herself on a Nicole Michael single to set the final score.

Offensively, Benko led the way with three hits, while Kobialka, Carr and Matta had two hits each. Benko also picked up the win in the circle with four innings of work, striking out five.

Kobialka worked the final frame and struck out two.

Chesterton opens Duneland Athletic Conference play tonight when they travel to Lake Central for a 4:30 first pitch.
