Back To Front Page

The Chesterton softball team scored five early runs and then hung on to pick up an 8-7 non-conference victory over Kankakee Valley on Monday.

The Trojans (18-6) started the scoring in the second with a solo home run from Kari LaFreniere. Hayley McBride followed with a walk just ahead of Madeline Hamady’s two-run homer.

Shelby Grimm and Maddie Snemis drew walks and both scored when Cassidy Grimm reached on an error.

KV answered with three runs in the third and another one in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4.

Chesterton scored three runs in the fifth inning as Snemis led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a throwing error on Lexi Benko’s fielders choice to start the rally.

LaFreniere’s squeeze bunt plated Snemis. Pinch-runner Noelle Michael and LaFreniere scored when Hailey Johansen reached on an error.

KV scored three runs in a seventh inning rally that started with an error, a single, a walk and a bloop over the infield. A two-run single followed to pull the Kougars within 8-7.

A pop out and ground out blew up the rally.

Lauren Anderson got the win for the Trojans with 4 1/3 innings of relief work (2 K’s). Kelly Carr got the final two outs of the game to record the save.

CHS returns to the field tonight when they head to LaPorte for a 4:30 p.m. start.
