CHS Softball falls in 12 innings

The Chesterton Trojans couldn’t crack the scoreboard and Kankakee Valley exploded late to take an 8-1 victory in 12 innings at CHS on Tuesday.

“We just didn’t hit the ball effectively,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We took too many strikes and hit a lot of balls straight up. We had 17 fly outs and we just have to do a better job of making adjustments.”

Kankakee Valley scored in the top of the 11th for a 1-0 lead before Sarah Richards scored for the Trojans in the bottom half of the inning. Richards had two of the Trojans’ five hits.

In the top of the 12th, the Trojans committed three of their six errors and gave up a grand slam home run as the Kougars scored seven to set the final score.

“Sydney (Cooley) did well until the 12th and our defense didn’t help things out either,” Hopson said. “She gave up a hit, a ball dropped that should have been caught and we threw a ball away on a bunt. The grand slam broke the game open.”
