CHS Softball falls 5-1 to Crown Point

In a one-game showdown for the Duneland Athletic Conference title, the Crown Point Bulldogs scored early and held on for a 5-1 victory over Chesterton Thursday night.

“We had some chances,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We struck out in some places where we just needed a fly ball and we didn’t get the big hit when we needed it.”

The Bulldogs scored two first inning runs and another in the second inning for a 3-0 lead against Trojan starter Megan Tymorek. Sydney Cooley replaced Tymorek with one out in the third inning.

“We had to minimize the damage,” Hopson said. “Sydney keeps the ball down for the most part. She did a nice job only giving up one earned run.”

The Trojans cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth as Megan Matheny hit a long home run over the left field wall and looked poised for a rally.

Cooley walked and moved to second as Amanda Dujmovich reached on a fielder’s choice. A single by Tymorek loaded the bases with no out. CP starter Miranda Elish struck out the next two Trojan hitters and got a ground ball to erase the threat.

“That was our chance to get back in it,” Hopson said. “You have to get a fly ball there to score somebody or hit it hard and make them field it and we didn’t.”

Crown Point scored a run in the fourth and an unearned run in the seventh to set the final score.
