CHS Softball falls 2-1 to Lake Central

If Lake Central is the top softball team in the area, there appears to be a team close on their heels.

The Indians improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play as they escaped Chesterton with a 2-1 victory over the Trojans on Thursday.

“A couple more hits here and there and things might be a little different,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said.

Lake Central scored the game’s first run in the third inning when Julia Druzbicki singled and stole second to lead off the inning. She scored on Sam Terry’s RBI double off of Chesterton starter Sydney Cooley.

Cooley escaped the bases loaded jam by getting back-to-back ground outs from Kaitlyn Ranieri and Jess Haskins.

“We had some older kids make mistakes they shouldn’t and some rookie kids make rookie mistakes tonight,” Hopson said. “I thought we overcame the mistakes we made. And Sydney’s a freshman and struggled a little, but she came up with big pitches when she had to.”

The Trojans tied the game in the fourth inning when Heather Overla lined a one-out single to left field. She moved to third on a single up the middle by Cooley and scored when Megan Matheny beat out a squeeze bunt.

“We manufactured a run and that was nice,” Hopson said. “We don’t call it that often. We talked about it and (Megan) said ‘got it covered coach’.”

LC scored the eventual game-winner in the fifth inning when Marissa Maluchnik singled to center and stole second base. Terry’s single to right field scored Maluchnik.

“We have a tough night in a couple of spots tonight and we worked ourselves into some really ugly jams,” Hopson said. “But, we were able to work ourselves out of them too.”

Chesterton had a chance to tie the game in the fifth when Jeannette Sosnowski doubled to right field to start the frame. After a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Richards moved her to third, Sammie Howard’s ground ball to second base was unable to plate Sosnowski.

“I didn’t think she had enough speed to get there, so I held her,” Hopson said. “I thought they’d get her at the plate.”

A ground ball ended the threat and the Trojans never got another base runner.

Chesterton returns to the field tonight when they host Hebron with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Lake Central 8, Chesterton 2

The Chesterton junior varsity couldn’t take advantage of a couple scoring opportunities and dropped an 8-2 decision to Lake Central on Tuesday.

Offensively, Shelby Carter, Kayla Karriman and Lindsey Campbell singled in the second inning to account for both Trojan runs.

CHS’ biggest threat came in the fifth when they loaded the bases, but couldn’t score.
