Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson finally got a little window and it was fun to
look out it.
The rain stopped just long enough on Thursday afternoon for the Chesterton
softball team to pound out a 14-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory.
“Brian Finley, Mr. Nallenweg and the rest of the guys did a great job of
getting the field ready to go,” Hopson said. “We helped a little bit, but
you can’t say enough about the work they did.”
The game originally scheduled to be played in Valparaiso, saw the Trojans as
the visiting team in the game and they took full advantage.
Jaren Lynch started the game by reaching on an error, and after a strikeout,
Sydney Cooley lined a two-run home run over the right-field fence for an
early lead.
The score remained that way before Chesterton opened up the third inning
with six consecutive singles. After Mallory McKee was hit by a pitch and
Jeannette Sosnowski walked, the Trojans had a 7-0 lead.
Things continued to roll as Sarah Richards drew a walk and Cooley singled
again. Cooley finished the night 3-for-3 with four RBI’s.
An RBI single for Taylor Harlow and a three-run triple by Megan Tymorek
pushed the lead to 14-0.
“We had a lot of really hard line drives and for not having seen any live
pitching, I was really pleased,” Hopson said.
Tymorek cruised through the first three innings in the circle for
Chesterton, allowing just one hit and striking out six before running into
trouble in the fourth.
Valpo picked up four hits and cut into the lead with three runs and added
one more in the fifth inning to set the final score.
“She hasn’t pitched in almost two weeks and I was pretty happy with what we
saw out there,” Hopson said. “Megan was really good the first three innings
and then kind of faded. All of our pitchers have done that, so they have to
stay strong or we’ll have to start platooning after three innings.”
The Trojans are scheduled to play on Friday at Crown Point with the first
pitch slated for 4:30 p.m.
