The Chesterton softball team dug a hole, but jumped out, and rolled to a
10-5 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Crown Point on Tuesday.
“The girls did a nice job with the bats tonight,” Chesterton coach LouAnn
Hopson said. “The last time we played them we had nine hits and very little
to show for it. Tonight we got some extra base hits at clutch times.”
CP scored an unearned run in the second inning and followed with three more
runs off of Chesterton starter Megan Tymorek in the third before she gave
way to Taylor Harlow.
“Megan started out great,” Hopson said. “Her rise ball and screw ball had CP
guessing. The run in the second was unearned and, in the third, I don’t know
if her ball just stopped moving or what, but Crown Point was really seeing
the ball.
“Taylor came in with two outs and a runner on and coaxed a ground ball to
end the inning.”
Chesterton (14-6, 9-3) immediately answered with a five-spot in the bottom
of the third.
Jeannette Sosnowski reached on a one-out error and scored on Heather
Overla’s double. Jaren Lynch walked and both scored on a double by Sydney
Cooley.
Cooley scored on a Harlow single and Bozak reached on a two-out infield
single that plated courtesy runner Micheala Sosby.
The Trojans added to the lead in the fifth with four more runs as Lynch led
off the inning with a solo home run. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Sarah Richardson hit a ground ball that went between the first and second
baseman and beat the throw to first allowing Sammie Howard to score.
Bozak kept running from second and also scored on the play. Mallory McKee
ended the scoring by coming in from third on a wild pitch.
The final touches for the Trojans on the win came in the sixth inning when
Sosby scored on a McKee single.
Harlow picked up the win by going the final 4 1/3 innings and allowing four
hits.
“It has been a long time since we asked Taylor to come in in the middle of
an inning,” Hopson said. “She did a great job.”
Cooley led the offense with three hits and a pair of RBI’s, while Harlow and
Bozak each had two hits.
