Back to Front Page

The Chesterton softball team pounded out 17 hits and had little trouble in picking up an easy 15-2 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Merrillville on Tuesday.

“Several of the girls had good nights with the bat,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “It was good to get everyone in and have them all get a couple of at bats.”

The Trojans wasted little time as Jaren Lynch and Heather Overla reached on back-to-back errors.

Lynch scored the game’s first run on a Sydney Cooley ground out and Overla scored on a Megan Matheny double.

Chesterton added four more runs in the second when Megan Tymorek doubled to start the frame and Sarah Richards reached on an error.

Tymorek scored on a Lynch ground out and Richards on a single by Overla. Matheny’s second hit of the night scored Overla for a 6-0 lead.

In the third, Tymorek and Ryan Bozak started the inning with singles before Richards beat out a bunt to load the bases. Lynch single to score Tymorek and Overla’s RBI single plated Richards. Lynch and Overla scored on a single by Cooley.

After Merrillville hit a home run with one out in the fourth inning, Chesterton put the final touches on the scoreboard with a five-run fifth inning.

Lynch and Mallory McKee singled ahead of a three-run home run by Cooley. Annette Frank reached on an error and Sammie Howard reached on a fielder’s choice.

Frank scored on an Ashlee Barkeloo single and Howard scored when Micheala Sosby reached on an error.

Cooley led the Trojan offense with three hits and seven RBI’s, while Taylor Harlow allowed just two hits and recorded eight strikeouts to get the victory.

“Taylor had a great game on the mound,” Hopson said. “And Sydney had a very good outing with the bat.”
