Chesterton senior Nathan O’Connor did everything he could do.

The senior finished 12th overall Saturday at the New Prairie Cross Country Semistate to advance to the IHSAA State Finals in Terre Haute next Saturday.

“Nathan ran an excellent race,” Chesterton coach Tim Ray said. “He worked himself through the field and put himself in great position for the final K and closed out well.”

The Trojans missed advancing as a team with a seventh place finish. The top six teams qualify.

“They ran their hearts out, but we were not at our best today,” Ray said. “I have never seen a group of kids accomplish more without God-given ability than this team. They made themselves into a championship team.”

O’Connor finished in 16:32.4. Lowell’s Gabriel Sanchez was the individual winner in 15:59.8.

“Nathan was a middle of the pack kid as a freshman and worked really hard to be a great runner. It is a tribute to him that he will end his high school cross country career at the State Meet.”

Other finishers for the Trojans included Matthew VanKley (27th, 16:59.3), Dylan Draves (34th, 17:05.2), Will Shook (52nd, 17:25.7), Kenny Erow (53rd, 17:26.5), Kyler Haynes (70th, 17:38.6) and Matthew Streeter (87th, 17:58.9).

“I am so proud of the seniors Kenny Erow, Matthew VanKley and Nathan O’Connor,” Ray said. “They embody what it means to be a Chesterton High School distance runner. They come from great families, they became great runners and leave a great legacy.

“They continued the deep, rich tradition of our distance program and they defined the word family with the passion and genuine care they have for one another.”
