From Chesterton’s girls soccer team rebounding from one win in its first
eight games to eventually topping Portage in an overtime thriller for a
sectional championship to Brian Norris, in what proved to be his final
season as head coach, leading the Trojans tennis team to the most wins (11)
during his six year tenure.
Add in James Sensibaugh, in his first season as varsity coach, taking the
Trojans soccer team from the door mat of the Duneland Athletic Conference to
a second place finish, along with the boys and girls cross country teams
being just one of four teams in the entire state to make back-to-back state
finals appearances and you had a rather special Fall for the athletes in
maroon and gold.
Those athletes, along with coaches, faculty, administration and parents,
were honored last night for their hard work and dedication at the 2004 Fall
Sports Awards Banquet held in the Chesterton High School auditorium.
In all, 11 CHS athletes were named Most Valuable to their respective team,
including three-sport star Matt Maple who was a repeat winner in football.
Joining Maple on the MVP list were Jason Lewis (Boys Soccer), Adam Martin
(Boys Cross Country), Zac Dawson (Boys Tennis), Jayson Jeffries (Boys
Tennis), Danielle Luther (Girls Soccer), Ally Ruoff (Girls Soccer), Kelly
Gaston (Volleyball), Sarah Kehe (Girls Cross Country), Kristin Kalita (Girls
Golf) and Mary Ballinger (Girls Cross Country).
Six of those athletes will be back in action next season at CHS, including
Kalita, the lone underclassmen to take home an MVP award, after her stellar
golf season where she became just the second Lady Trojan to advance to the
state finals and first since 1980.
Mental attitude award winners included Lindsey Andershock (Girls Golf),
Kevin Weaver (Boys Soccer), Liz Levrio (Volleyball), Andrew Biggs (Boys
Tennis), Chrissy Terstenyak (Girls Soccer), Max Goldak (Boys Cross Country),
Tess Mullin (Girls Cross Country) and Casey Martin (Football).
Most Improved awards went out to Keri O’Brien (Girls Golf), Marc Nelson
(Boys Soccer), Katrina Pradziad and Maddie Wilk (Volleyball), Gerard
Pannekoek (Boys Tennis), Laura DeLeon and Angela Seawright (Girls Soccer),
Brian Killingbeck (Boys Cross Country), Katie Cahillane (Girls Cross
Country) and Kyle Yelton (Football).
The newly added honor, and what many described as the most important, the
Sportsmanship Award was received by Brittni Choucalas (Girls Golf), John
Nowicki (Boys Soccer), Natalie Maxwell (Volleyball), Scott Coffer (Boys
Tennis), Heather Banghart (Girls Soccer), Alex Cornwell (Boys Cross
Country), Ali Bishel (Girls Cross Country) and Jon Schwoegler (Football).
Other special winners were Jessie Kowalski, who brought home both the Larry
James and Leonard Tengblad Awards for her senior leadership she conveyed to
the girls cross country team, and on the boys side, Kyle Huber was the
recipient of the Leonard Tengblad Award and Max Goldak won the Larry James
Award.
Greg Osborn, Ed Lawson and Kelly Peller were each named most consistent
runners for their stellar cross country seasons.
Jessica Sharp was named the offensive MVP for the volleyball team after the
sophomore broke the school-record for number of kills in a season (258),
while Alyssa Phelps was the defensive MVP.
Kelly Gaston also broke the school-record for digs in a season (401) and
serve recieve percentage (91.7%) and serve receive to setter percentage
(80.2%).
Senior volleyball player Natalie Maxwell also earned first team academic
all-state.
John Snyder, head football coach the past nine seasons, was recognized for
his fourth winning season in DAC play.
Before Snyder, the Trojans had just five total winning conference seasons in
the 34-year history of the DAC.
