The Valparaiso Vikings have controlled the IHSAA Chesterton Sectional Meet for that long, but that came to a crashing halt on Saturday as the No. 1 ranked Trojans beat the Vikings 113.525-111.5 to win for the first time since 2003.

“We’re extremely talented and it’s a great honor to bring a Sectional title home,” Chesterton coach Dawn Matthys said. “It’s an honor to coach a group of girls that work so hard. We’ve led all year and been undefeated, so it’s what we expect now. I think they are coming into their own and realize what they are capable of.”

The Trojans got off to a great start on the Bars as Sophie Hunzelman turned in the day’s top performance (9.65). Chesterton also got a 9.425 from Jordan Bush and a 9.375 from Brittney Troup.

“Starting on bars is always a strong thing for us,” Matthys said. “I thought the girls did great. We had stellar performances from Sophie and a couple of other really strong showings from Jordan and Brittney.”

On Beam, Hunzelman continued to lead the way with a 9.725 win for the individual title. Lexi Avey scored a 9.375 and Bush added a 9.075.

“Beam is always strong for us, even though we had to count a fall,” Matthys said.

Moving to the Floor, the Trojans put a stranglehold on the meet by posting four scores at 9.45 or higher. Bush won the individual title (9.65), followed by a runner-up finish for Hunzelman (9.625), a 9.475 by Avey and a 9.45 by Baylie Lawson.

“On Floor, we had to step up and make up for the Beam,” Matthys said. “They were all so good on floor that we were separated by just a few tenths.”

Finishing the day on the Vault, the Trojans got a season-best performance by freshman Whitney Siewin (9.5) to win the event title. Hunzelman was runner-up (9.625) and Bush scored 9.25..

“On vault, our little freshman Whitney (Siewin) has worked her tail off on her only event and took the whole thing. It was the best vault I’ve ever seen her do today,” Matthys said. “We had four kids that only did one event today and they all came through with great leadoff performances on events for us.”

Hunzleman won the All-Around title with a 38.40 total.

“They usually come out of the meet one, two,” Matthys said. “It’s like they are just alternating who is going to come out on top that day.”

The Trojans eye a berth in the State Finals next Saturday when they participate in the IHSAA Valparaiso Regional beginning at 1 p.m.

“We counted a fall and had at least one bar routine that wasn’t what it should be,” Matthys said. “We came up a little short on a couple of vaults today, so it wasn’t our best day. It’s nice to come up with 113 on not our best day.”
