New coach. Same tradition.

Mat Pavlovich admitted to being a little nervous Saturday before the IHSAA Sectional Finals at Valparaiso High School, his first as Chesterton’s head coach.

“First one here at Chesterton for me,” Pavlovich said of the Trojans securing their 21st straight Sectional title. “It’s pretty special. I was a little nervous with the storied history they have here. But, this team is so talented, that maybe the pressure was to keep them at the level they are used to competing.”

The Trojans amassed 561 points to outdistance the host Vikings (378). Hobart and LaPorte tied for third (263) and Michigan City rounded out the top five (207).

“The kids swam great today,” Pavlovich said. “It wasn’t perfect, but it was a very positive day. We got a lot of advancemen to the State Meet next weekend.”

Chesterton won six individual titles led by a double victory from Maisyn Klimczak in the 200 Free (1:52.30) and the 500 Free (4:59.39).

“Our top kids came through like you’d expect them to,” Pavlovich said. “Our goal was to get through the meet and qualify. Then see what we can do. I think we’re right where we need to be.

“I think Maisyn has even more to show.”

Other winners for the Trojans included Veronika Ozimek in the 200 IM (2:0573), Olivia Kroeger in the 100 Fly (56.72), Mady Elliott in the 100 Back (56.39) and Alana Jardenil in the 100 Breast (1:04.67).

“The race of the day was the 100 Back between (Mady) Elliott and (Jordan) Alders,” Pavlovich said. “They both looked great and Jordan dropped a couple of seconds to get the State cut. Mady’s third turn was so good that she was able to pull ahead.”

Chesterton dominated all three relays beginning with the 200 Medley team of Elliott, Jardenil, Kroeger and Ozimek in 1:44.33.

“For Olivia to do what she did today after dealing with the injuries she had to deal with,” Pavlovich said. “To perform at this level in the Fly is a real shot in the arm for the Medley Relay. We got a Sectional record with her on there today. She really solidifies it.”

The 200 Free Relay team of Sierra Jones, Sophia Gill, Abigail Raines and Lauren Unruh won in 1:38.24, while the 400 Free Relay quartet of Unruh, Alders, Klimczak and Ozimek won in 3:32.55.

“I think we have some more rest to do and we weren’t 100 percent tapered yet,” Pavlovich said. “Hopefully we can do just as well, or even better, next weekend.”

The Trojans return to the pool on Friday night in the IHSAA State Finals Prelims at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.
