The Chesterton girls basketball team improved to 7-0 on the season and handed Class 4A No. 7 East Chicago Central (9-1) its first loss of the season in a 58-43 victory on Tuesday night.

“These kids hang out together,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “On the court. Off the court. They are always together and I really think that helps.

“They’ve bought into the fact that they want to be as good as they can be. Tonight was a good win.”

Sarah Dzierba hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Trojans built a 13-5 lead. Things only got better from there as a 17-2 run to end the first half put Chesterton on top 30-10 at the break.

The Cardinals mounted a comeback in the third quarter and cut the lead to 37-27 after three quarters, but the Trojans used solid free throw shooting and their pressure defense to keep EC from getting any closer.

“Things started going the other way for us tonight in the third quarter,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “And we came back. That’s a big thing for us.”

Offensively, Courtney Krol led the way for Chesterton with 17 points, with Dzierba (13 points), Hailey Vale (13 points) and Maddie Scott (11 points) all reaching double figures as well.

The Trojans hit on 17-of-20 free throw attempts and dished out 10 assists on their 18 baskets, while also recording 11 steals.

Chesterton also won the rebounding battle 23-21 led by Marney Sisson with seven boards and Vale with six.

The Trojans return to the court on Friday when they travel to Michigan City to face the Wolves. The JV game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
