CHS Girls Tennis falls in Sectional Finals

The Chesterton girls tennis team battled, but couldn’t get over the hump and dropped a 4-1 decision to Valparaiso in the championship match of the IHSAA Portage Sectional on Thursday.

“I couldn’t be prouder of how this team continued to impress me as the season went on,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “After only winning three matches in each of the last two seasons, to turn it around and win nine matches and have a chance to win the Sectional is just a tribute to the girls efforts.”

The Trojans lone victory came at No. 2 singles where Olivia Vesling outlasted A.K. Flude 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Chesterton came up just short in gaining the two team points they needed in doubles as Ema Gilliana and Keeley Evans beat the Trojan duo of Kara Maggio and Eliza Tumbas at No. 1 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 2, Valpo’s Grace Healy and Aleah Ferngren beat Rachel Fredenburg and Megan Hill 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

“We graduate nine girls, but our program is going to be just fine going forward with our talented youth and great leadership from the experienced players we’ll have returning,” Bour said.
