CHS Girls Tennis beats South Bend Clay

Back to Front Page

The Chesterton girls tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a convincing 4-1 victory over South Bend Clay on Wednesday afternoon.

“The wind was really tough for everyone out there,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said. “The ball just isn’t where you think it’s going to be. You have to keep your feet moving and concentrate that much more.

“The key was we adjusted better as a team to the wind than Clay did.”

Sophomore Jannon Jeffries was the first Trojan off the court with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against Allison Dale. Erin DeVaney followed a short time later with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Julia Abarr.

“Our singles kids did an outstanding job,” Shinn said. “Jannon didn’t lose a game and Erin won handily too.”

In doubles, Cristi Williams and Bharathi Muthusamy had little trouble in picking up a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Mikaela McDonald and Aubrey Freel at No. 1. Amanda Gore and Christine Lambert followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Sarah Hama and Ellie Lange.

“Everything changes because of the wind when you’re out there,” Shinn said. “On one side of the net, it’s at your back and you have to ease up on your stroke. Then you go to the other side and you have to hit it as hard as you can just to get it over.”

The Trojans return to the court tonight when they travel to No. 17 Michigan City for a 4 p.m. start.
