CHS Girls Swimming places 10th at State Meet

While sophomore Alana Jardenil was competing in the state finals of the 100-yard breaststroke, Chesterton coach Mat Pavlovich wasn’t sure what to think.

“I’m watching the race and it’s like ‘hmm, she’s not really moving that well,’ and you freak out because she’s behind,” Pavlovich said.

As it turned out, Jardenil posted a time of 1 minute and 4.28 seconds -- her second-best time of her career -- for a seventh place finish in the breaststroke at Saturday’s girls swimming state finals held at IU Natatorium.

“That race was kind of deceiving, even for the swimmers,” Pavlovich said. “Alana got out and looked disappointed and it’s like hey, that’s the second-best time she’s ever gone. She’s worked so hard.

“If she can be close to girls for the first 25, 50, she’s gonna come on strong that last 50.”

Jardenil had posted her career-best time in Friday’s state prelims with a 1:03.58, breaking the school-record of 1:04.52 that she set in last week’s sectional prelims. She was 15th in the 200 IM in 2:07.57.

“Obviously that wasn’t exactly where I wanted to be, but it was still my second-best time, ever,” Jardenil said of her breaststroke race. “I came in wanting to be top eight and seventh is better than eighth, so I’m so happy with it.

“Going into sectionals even, I knew I wanted to get the record. After I got it, I knew I wanted it again since I only broke it by a hundredth of a second. I trained really hard this year and I knew I worked for it, it was just trusting what I’d done throughout the season.”

As a team, the Trojans were the Region’s top team finisher, placing 10th with 77 points. Carmel won its 34th straight crown with 426.5 points.

“It was a great season, the kids bought into me, and I think we have a bright future,” Pavlovich said. “We’re not graduating a lot of kids from this team, so obviously we can do even better next year.”

Junior Maisyn Klimczak was the best overall finisher for the Trojans, taking fifth in the 500-freestyle for the second straight season. She swam 4:59.44 in the 500, adding an 18th in the 200-free.

“I was thinking I wanna do as best as I can, but I know there are people that are gonna beat me, so I tried to be reasonable about what place I’d get,” Klimczak said of the 500 free. “The girl I swam next to at prelims barely touched me out so it was like ‘alright, time to get my revenge.’ The 500 is such a long race and I saw I could get fifth, and that was more points for the team to get us into the top 10 like we wanted to.

“I haven’t been feeling the best over the last couple days and knowing that it was the best I could have done, I’m happy with it.”

Klimczak also teamed up with Lauren Unruh, Jordan Alders and Veronika Ozimek for an 11th place finish in 3:31.71 in the 400-free relay. Ozimek, Jardenil, Mady Elliott and Olivia Kroeger were seventh in the 200-medley relay in 1:45.72, while the 200-free relay of Sierra Jones, Sophia Gill, Abi Raines and Lauren Unruh was 13th in 1:38.50,

“It was another great experience here and I’m very grateful to have it,” Klimczak said. “You get a new look at competition coming up for next year. You see who will be here, who is better and what you need to work on.”

Ozimek (12th in 100-butterfly, 18th in 200 IM), Unruh (24th in 200 free, 19th in 500 free), Kroeger (17th in 100 fly), Elliott (20th in 100 back), and Alders (22nd in 200 free, 17th in 100 back) rounded out the team’s state finishers

“A few things didn’t go our way this year, but I feel like we did everything right,” Pavlovich said. “We trained hard, the kids listened. No regrets or anything, it was a good day. Could it be better? Yeah, of course, but overall, it’s a top 10.”
