The Chesterton girls swim team set themselves up for a 19th consecutive IHSAA Sectional title in the prelims at LaPorte High School.

“We qualified what we needed to for Saturday,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “It was far from great. Not only was it prelims, but we are dealing with the flu. Hopefully, a few more days of getting better will help.”

The Trojans will be the top seed in 8-of-11 events, including all three relays. In five events, Chesterton will hold the top three seeds.

“It was just hard for everybody to get up for tonight,” Kinel said. “But, I think it was hard for the entire Sectional. It is what it is. In this sport, if the emotion isn’t there, it’s rough going. It’ll be there on Saturday though.”

Top individual seeds for the Trojans include Lauryn Kallay (200 Free), Jaclyn Klimczak (200 IM, 100 Back), Olivia Kroeger (100 Fly) and Maisyn Klimczak (500 Free).

“Kids like Lauryn (Kallay), Jaclyn (Klimczak), Maisyn (Klimczak) and Lauren Unruh all did what they had to do,” Kinel said. “Mady Elliott on the Medley Relay and the Back was awesome with her two best swims. Lily Soeter in the Back was great. Abby Koster had lifetime swims in both of her events (100 Fly, 100 Breast).”

The Trojans return to LaPorte for the Diving prelims at 9 a.m. and for the Swimming finals beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
